Examiner Approved IELTS Speaking Tips

📌24 Hour English Warm-Up

Have you ever gone into English class after a few days without speaking English? How do you normally feel in the first 10 minutes? It takes most students 10-15 minutes to ‘warm-up’ and perform to the best of their ability. Just like an athlete warming up before a sporting event, it takes time for you to get back to your correct level. If you don’t warm up before your speaking test, it will be over before you are really ready to show the examiner how good you are.

For these reasons you should speak, write, read and listen to only English for 24 hours before your test. Your family and friends might think you are crazy, but it will really make a huge difference to your score.

📌Speak a Little English Every Day

It is better to practice a little every day than speak your native language all week and then go to English class once or twice a week. ‘But I have nobody to practice with!’ I understand that you might have very few native speakers to practice with in your local area, but the internet is full of people willing to talk to you.

The previous year's harvests had failed and in the winter of 1620 half of the pilgrims had starved to death.

Day of Black Consciousness is commemorated in Brazilian cities.

The date was chosen to coincide with the day of the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, in 1695. The Day of Black Consciousness seeks to be a date to remember the black resistance to slavery in general, since the first transport of Africans to Brazilian soil (1549).

Some entities such as the Movimento Negro (the largest of its kind in the country) organize lectures and educational events, mainly targeting black children. It seeks to prevent the development of self-bias, ie, inferiority in society. Other topics discussed by the black community and that are highlighted on this day are: insertion of blacks in the labor marketuniversity quotas, if there is discrimination by the policeidentification of ethnicityfashion and black beauty, etc.

National Day of Zumbi: Consciousness in Brazil

Celebrated on the 20th of November, the holiday was established officially by Law No. 12,519 on November 10, 2011, and sanctioned by President Dilma Rousseff. This affirmed the history of Black people in Brazil, while commemorating the life of one of their most brilliant military leaders,  Zumbi dos Palmares, who died on Nov. 20, 1695.

Zumbi: Black Brazil’s Legendary History of Resistance
Zumbi dos Palmares was the leader of the independent settlement, Quilombo of Palmares - located between the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil, which was founded by early Brazilian Africans as a resistance to European colonizers and slavers.
The Quilombo Of Palmares can therefore be considered one of the the first places, in the Americas, where Black people, who were brought to the New World enslaved, found freedom. Here they bravely fought against enslavement for almost a hundred years as the Portuguese attempted to colonize Brazil.
The Quilombo emerged in the late sixteenth century and peaked in the second half of the seventeenth century. During this time, resistance to the current slave order was only possible because of adept organizational, military and architectural skills: the Quilombo was surrounded by a high fence made of clay, and palm trees. It had three entrances protected by at least two hundred warriors, who possessed weapons and ammunition, and managed to defeat the expeditions of the colonial government several times, which sought to destroy the Republic of Palmares and the freedom it embodied.

Zumbi, born in the Quilombo in 1655, was kidnapped as a child by soldiers and given to a priest by the name of Father Antonio Melo. He was baptized with the name Francisco and taught Portuguese and Latin. In the year 1670, at only fifteen years old, he resisted the white settlers who he lived among, fleeing from the parish to return to his original home in the Quilombo.

National Day Of Black Consciousness Celebrates The Beauty Of Afro-Brazilians

Brazil is South America’s largest country, and has the largest black population outside of Africa.  And yet, black people in Brazil experience numerous harsh realities that their white counterparts don’t, with darker-skinned Brazilians routinely experiencing poverty and discrimination on a much larger scale.
Brazil has had a history of avoiding important conversations about race in spite of its diversity, but on the National Day of Zumbi and Black Consciousness, black Brazilians have the opportunity to celebrate their black identities and the late Zumbi dos Palmares, one of the country’s most famous black military leaders, who fought against European settlers in the independent settlement of Quilombo.
Thus, November 20 is a day of remembrance and celebration, and different regions observe the holiday with marches, parades, and demonstrations. And it seems that the holiday is vital now more than ever.

National Day of Black Consciousness

The Day of Black Awareness ("Dia da Consciência Negra" in Portuguese) is celebrated annually on November 20 in Brazil as a day on which to reflect upon the injustices of slavery (from the first transport of African slaves to Brazil in 1594) and to celebrate the contributions to society and to the nation by Brazilian citizens of African descent. It takes place during the Week of Black Awareness.

The day is marked on the anniversary of the death of Zumbi dos Palmares (1655–1695), the last leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares. The Day of the Black Awareness.
The date was first observed in the 1960s and has been on the school calendar since 2003.
