Get Going with Grammar (Board games)

Get Going with Grammar has been specially created to encourage students to practise specific grammar points through games.

Teacher’s Notes are provided for every game. There is a built-in adaptability component to these games: you can use the game provided or play one of the suggested variations. For many of the games, templates have been provided that allow the teacher to make his or her own version.

ELT terms - defined and referenced!

Accuracy

Accuracy describes the ability to write or speak a foreign language without making grammatical, vocabulary, spelling or pronunciation mistakes. It is often contrasted with fluency. Classroom activities are sometimes categorised into those that promote fluency and those that promote accuracy.

Example

"She makes lots of grammar and pronunciation mistakes – her speech isn’t very accurate; but she speaks so fluently and expressively that everyone understands her."

Acquisition

The way in which languages are learnt unconsciously or ‘picked up’ by exposure to comprehensible input. In this definition, the term acquisition is used in contrast to learning, which is seen as a deliberate and conscious process of rule learning and self-monitoring of language use. However the terms acquisition and learning are used interchangeably by some writers.

Example

"She learnt Portuguese simply through acquisition – hearing and reading it all around her and chatting with friends. She never studied it."

Emotions Printable Card Game

Emotions Card Game

The game cards are divided into two types – those with an orange border are the activity cards (16 cards in total) and those with a purple border are the emotions cards (40 cards in total). Download the game cards here.

Print two copies of all cards onto matte photo paper or cardstock. Cut them out and laminate for durability.

Ways to Play & Learn With Emotions Cards.

1. Making Faces

Place a set of cards face down on a stack. Turn over the top card. Have your child name the emotion and make a face to match.

2. Guess the Emotion

Spread out a set of cards face up. Take turns to choose a card but don’t tell the other players which you have chosen. Make a face and see if the other players can guess which card you chose.

3. The Way I Feel Story Game 

Spread out a set of cards face up. Take turns to choose a card but don’t tell the other players which you have chosen. Tell a short story about a time you felt like that and see if the other players can guess which card you chose.

Morning Routine

- How to politely enter and exit the classroom

- How and when to turn in homework, homework folder, or parent notes

- Where to put packed lunch

- Where to put backpack, coat, etc.

- How to do lunch count if your school does that

- How to do attendance if they help with that (in my Fun Teaching Graphing Ideas blog post, I show how to use a daily graphing question to help take attendance which is also math practice and a fun way to start calendar later in the day)

- What to do after they’ve put away their backpack, done lunch count, etc. (have a specific task like start morning work or start morning tubs)

#Printable #Time #Telling #Game

To play this game you will need 3 dices (can also use 4), preferably in two different colors. You could also use less dices and have the kids throw them multiple times. We used two red ones for hours and a white one for minutes (each number meaning 10 minutes). As kids throw dices they have to push the hands of the watch to match the hour and minutes on dices.

Like we threw 3 (red dices) and 4 – that translates to 3:40!

Now if you want to give this game a goal you can write down a few different times kids must “score”

Easy method: Kids must hit a time between 03:30 to 4:00

Hard method: Exact times – like 10:20
