HOW TO USE THE ESL LIBRARY ROLE-PLAY SECTION
- Choose a theme that you are working on in the classroom (e.g. Shopping).
- Open and print the PDF and decide whether to use the full-page Scenariosor the Quick Cards. If you are using the Scenarios, print and photocopy as many as you need. If you are using the Quick Cards, print one copy and cut them out. Learn more about these options in the Teachers’ Notes.
- Put your students in pairs and give them each a Scenario or Quick Card. If you have more than 18 students in your classroom, you will need to add another theme pack.
- Give your students time to work on Scenarios (with scripts) or call pairs up one at a time to act out the Quick Cards (improv).
TIPS FOR USING ROLE-PLAYS WITH ENGLISH LEARNERS
Some English learners love role-play activities, but others are less enthusiastic. If you have a few students who are uncomfortable improvising or performing in front of the class, you can give them a different role during Role-Play activities. For example, instead of being an actor (Student A or B), they can be a director, reviewer, or props manager. They can offer prompts to students who can’t think of a line, or they can write down useful expressions on the board as the performers use them. You could also ask shy or nervous students to write a written response about a performance (reviewer). Find more tips in the Teachers’ Notes.
